Couples using Partner Sperm Counselling Fertility Counselling - why it is important Counselling for those using donor sperm is recognised to be an integral part of the treatment process. At the initial stage of treatment it often differs from therapeutic counselling as it provides access to information that you need and will explore every aspect of treatment in an open and unbiased way. We believe that the chances of pregnancy are best if our patients feel fully prepared and ready for what lies ahead. Consideration of the implications of this type of treatment for yourself, for any existing child and any future child, as well as for your family as a whole, is particularly important. Moral, ethical and religious aspects need to be taken into account and a full understanding of the legal facts and associated implications of using donor gametes is essential. The law requires that the welfare of any future child and of any existing child or children must be taken into account before treatment is offered. Counselling will also address the future needs of the unborn child with specific reference to the right to certain information about the donor. Discussion will include what information is available and when and how to impart this information. In situations in which existing children are directly affected by treatment, their needs will also require consideration
