Couples using Partner Sperm

Patients Suitable for Treatment

IUI is a good initial treatment option for many couples who have been unable to achieve a pregnancy through normal intercourse within a period of 12 months or more when the probable cause is: -

  • Oligospermia - a reduced sperm count of the male partner.
  • Poor movement or motility of the male partner's sperm.

Either fresh or previously frozen partner sperm can be used.

Both partners will need to attend the Initial Consultation, when alternative treatment options may also be considered but, following this, the first treatment stage is a full investigation of the male partner.

What ever the final choice of treatment strategy, we do everything we can to make treatment with the male partner's sperm possible by using our advanced sperm recovery techniques - PESA andTESE. These enable the use of IVF treatment with ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection), giving many successful results.

This investigation may include a recommendation to undertake the Sperm DNA Fragmentation Assay (SDFA)

  • The SDFA helps guide the best choice of infertility treatment by evaluating sperm health issues that are not detectable by a standard semen analysis.
  • This test evaluates sperm DNA damage, which has been shown to place couples at a severe disadvantage for success with IUI and IVF, therefore indicating ICSI as the method of choice.

The SDFA, combined with the other sperm assessment parameters, provides vital information as to which treatment protocols would be less successful for you and your partner. By eliminating the treatment protocols that are less likely to be effective, we can help you choose the treatment pathway that improves your chances of success.
